Texas Nodal Update: APX Fully Committed to Supporting ERCOT Clients

Early Deliver Systems (EDS1) – APX has been heavily involved in EDS1 activities.  In the early stages of EDS1, APX assisted ERCOT with the Beta Testing of ERCOT ICCP mapping for Level 3 and Level 4 QSE’s.  In preparation for ICCP Point-to-Point testing, APX has upgraded all SCADA software to meet or exceed all ERCOT requirements.  APX clients benefit by having APX test this infrastructure on their behalf.  APX performed mandatory Point-to-Point testing with ERCOT July 16-20 and 23-25 and has worked closely with ERCOT to identify and alleviate any issues.

EDS2 – During this release ERCOT will focus their efforts on ensuring that the EMS (Energy Management System), NMMS (Network Model Management System), and NOMCR (Network Operations Model Change Request) systems are able to function properly and integrate with eachother.  In mid-August, Market Participants will have the functionality to enroll and access the ERCOT MIS Portal.  In mid September, all APX clients will benefit as is APX being trained on the Network Operation Model Change Request processes to ensure that APX can support your business needs.

EDS3 – This release consists of ensuring the proper functionality of SCED (Security Constrained Economic Dispatch), LFC (Load Frequency Control) and CRR Allocation and Auction.  APX is currently in the process of developing the new APX Power Markets Application Suite that will provide clients customized functionality to support their business.  The APX Power Markets Application Suite will provide clients with a user-friendly way of conducting business in the TX Nodal Market.  In July, APX began connectivity testing to the Nodal Sandbox to gauge web services development.  APX is planning to perform SCED Input Validation and SCED Input Execution on October 1, 2007.  APX plans to provide ERCOT clients with access to the New APX Power Markets Application Suite in 2008, and leading up to that APX will be coordinating mandatory testing with clients.

APX continues to track the ERCOT Nodal Market developments closely and is fully committed to supporting our clients in the ERCOT markets. We have dedicated budget and personnel toward building the new APX Power Markets Application Suite according to ERCOT’s schedule.

Wind Project Support and Operations

APX currently provides consulting services to assist wind developers in site selection by evaluating the future price for energy in both the zonal and nodal markets.  This information is critical to understanding the future value of any wind site development.

In addition, APX has the ability to provide hosted solutions and ongoing services for wind generation projects. In ERCOT, APX can provide required telemetry and SCADA services from the wind project on behalf of the client’s QSE; a hosted scheduling and bidding application for submission of information and resource plans; and thorough, granular settlement information in a web-based format.

In all ISOs (including ERCOT), APX offers automated integration between wind forecasting tools and schedule submission; NERC tag creation and monitoring support; and answering phones for the wind project either 24/7 or after hours.

These services allow wind developers to focus on their core competencies, while receiving very cost-effective support from APX for the ongoing management of their ISO scheduling and operations requirements.

Current Market Update

EILS (ERCOT Emergency Interruptible Load Service) - Market Participants, ERCOT will be implementing the voluntary firm load shedding program for the October 2007 to January 2008.  ERCOT offered two training workshops in Dallas and Houston in July.

If you were unable to attend these meetings and are interested in participating in the EILS program feel free to contact Robert Douglas (408.517.2129).

"Redesigning The Future" Conference - A Great Success!

On June 6th and 7th, APX hosted “Redesigning the Future” for APX clients and prospective clients.  The day-and- a-half conference focused on upcoming business challenges related to CAISO MRTU and TX Nodal market redesign.  In addition to a series of presentations related to business realities market participants are facing, all attendees had a great time and chance to network at a San Diego Padres baseball game.  Special speakers at the event included former FERC Commissioner Nora Mead Brownell and Dr. Michelle Michot Foss, Chief Economist and Head of the Center for Energy Economics, University of Texas at Austin.

The key theme of the conference was preparation for nodal markets, so be sure to download our "Nodal Markets Checklist" which can help you “cover your bases” with respect to preparations for Texas Nodal.

If you missed the conference but would like more information about the business realities of either market redesign, contact Wendy Brown (281.489.7633).
